RESPECT OF PARENTS

Respect of Parents: A Fundamental Principle in Islam

Islam places great emphasis on the importance of respecting and honoring parents. This is because parents are regarded as a great blessing from Allah, the Almighty. They play a vital role in shaping the personality and character of their children. Therefore, it is incumbent upon children to show love, respect, and obedience to their parents throughout their lives. The Quran and the Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) are replete with verses and sayings that highlight the importance of respecting parents. For instance, Allah says in the Quran: “And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small." (Quran 17:23-24) In this verse, Allah not only commands children to treat their parents kindly but also to speak to them in a respectful and gentle manner. Even if parents are old and senile, children should not show any signs of annoyance or frustration. Rather, they should demonstrate utmost patience and compassion towards them. Furthermore, the Prophet (PBUH) has repeatedly emphasized the importance of respecting parents. He once said: “Paradise is under the feet of the mother.” (Sunan an-Nasa'i) This Hadith highlights the significance of mothers in Islam and the reward that awaits those who respect and serve their mothers. Similarly, the Prophet (PBUH) has also said: “He who wishes to enter Paradise through its best door must first respect his parents.” (Sahih Bukhari) This Hadith emphasizes the importance of respecting parents as a means of entering Paradise, the ultimate goal of a Muslim's life. Respect for parents is not limited to just their lifetime; it extends even after their death. Islam commands children to perform acts of kindness and supplication for their deceased parents. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Your Lord has rights over you, your body has rights over you, and your family has rights over you. So give each their due right. Verily, your mother has a right over you, so do not let her die until you have fulfilled her rights. And your father has a right over you, so do not let him die until you have fulfilled his rights.” (Sunan Ibn Majah) This Hadith underscores the importance of fulfilling the rights of parents, not only in their lifetime but even after their death. In conclusion, respecting and honoring parents is a fundamental principle in Islam. It is a duty and a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Children should always be mindful of the fact that their parents have sacrificed a lot for them, and it is their duty to repay them with love, respect, and kindness. In this way, they will not only earn the pleasure of Allah, but they will also enjoy a harmonious and peaceful family life.
